IBM's Partner Profitability Tool, to launch the week of March 26, is designed to put a rough number and date on the ROI of partnering. While a rough, and uncertain, two-year estimate, it marks the first time a partner can attach a number to the "'Is it worth it?' question," said Richard Beaudin, IBM Software Group's Worldwide Systems Integrators Alliances Channel Marketing manager.

IBM is beginning to market itself as a channel enabler with sales and marketing connections worldwide for a turnkey channel in new markets. But the audience isn't U.S. firms going international, it's foreign developers with world-class apps chomping for a shot at North America.

IBM Channel execs said they made the call to move PartnerWorld from Vegas to St. LOuis after partners expressed some waning interest in a fourth consecutive PW in Sin City. Chairman Sam Palmisano may have looked fondly on the move as he is making his first PW appearance in several years.

IBM is after perhaps the smallest partners it has ever dealt with, making a cheaper, "lighter" version of the open-source WebSphere Application Server Community Edition and DB2 Express-C, the no-license-fee database. The offering is made to order for VARs and ISVs that can't afford and never needed the robustness of the typical IBM gear, but that could benefit from building and deploying SMB, departmental or branch office solutions...
