A Big Case of True Power

A big honking computer usually needs a big honking power supply, but no one says that power supply has to be inefficient! Antec is aiming to bring watts and efficiency together in the TruePower Quattro PSU (power supply unit), which is also the perfect power supply for Antec's latest high-end tower case, the 1200 Series.

Antec's TruePower Quattro PSU has been designed to meet the 80 Plus certification, which means that the PSU creates less heat, uses much more efficient technology and makes a lot less noise. Specifically, the certification means that the PSU is more than 80 percent efficient and the PSU is at least 33 percent more efficient then previous-generation power supply units. That can translate to a savings of more than $70 in electricity costs over the life of the PC. Add to that the reduced heat and increased reliability and 80 Plus certified power supply units start to make a lot of sense. Antec's unit comes in two flavors, an 850-watt unit and a 1,000-watt unit. Both feature:

• 850 or 1,000 watts continuous power output (up to 50°C)
• Support for EPS12V v2.91 and ATX12V standards
• Four +12V outputs (up to 70A combined)
• Low-noise 80mm variable-speed cooling fan
• High efficiency (up to 85 percent) with 80 Plus certification
• Active PFC with Universal AC line input
• Combination fixed and modular cables, fully sleeved
• Four PCI-E connectors (two six-pin and two eight-pin)
• Stylish white-on-black racing stripe paint job
• Five-year AQ5 warranty

System builders will like the flexibility offered by the cable management system designed into the PSU. Techs can pick and choose which cables to install and everything is clearly labeled.

The cooling fan speed is temperature-controlled and proves to be very quiet. The 1,000-watt unit has an MSRP of $299.99, while the 850-watt unit is priced at $249.00. Street prices are significantly lower on the units.

A perfect companion to the TruePower Quattro PSU is Antec's top-of-the-line full tower case, the 1200 Series. The full-size tower case can be used for servers or high-end systems and features a top-mounted 200mm fan, two 120mm fans in the back and up to four HDD cages each with a 120mm fan. The side panel has additional space for one more 120mm fan that will blow directly on the graphics card.

There are a total of 12 5.25-inch drive bays that can be used for hard disks, optical drives or other devices. The front bezel has small punched holes that allow for direct cooling of the drive bays. Users will find removable dust filters behind the bezel, which help to keep dust outside of the case. The filters are easy accessible for cleaning purposes. The case is set up to handle most motherboard sizes and offers plenty of room for accessories. Those looking to keep their CPUs extra-cool and fan noise low will like the support for liquid cooling systems. Overall, the system proves to be exceptionally quiet when the fans are set to the lowest speeds and a low-noise power supply (such as the Quattro) is used. The 1200 Series has an MSRP of $209 and street prices of under $150.

Combining Antec's 1200 Series Case with the company's TruePower Quattro Power Supply brings quiet, cool and green all together.
